The number one question I receive from expecting mamas is "What is the best time to schedule my newborn session". There are a lot of varying factors to choosing the best time for you and your family, and typically my answer is "Whichever time fits best for YOU!". As a photographer who has photographed dozens of babies in the North Georgia Region, I can honestly say that the best time is any time!
All babies are beautiful regardless of their age, and there is no “perfect” time to schedule your newborn photos. In fact, I love all the stages and milestones so much that I now offer a Baby Year Membership (called the Wonder Year Collection) to allow parents to book multiple sessions throughout their baby’s first year.
If you’re looking to schedule photos for your new baby, here is a guide on what you can expect for different age ranges.
Why not skip the newborn session?
Welcoming a newborn into your family is a life-changing experience that can be both exciting and overwhelming. One way to preserve those precious first moments is by scheduling a newborn photography session. These sessions not only provide you with beautiful images that you can treasure for years to come, but they also offer a chance for you to document the tiny details and features that change so quickly as your little one grows. By scheduling a newborn session, you can capture those first smiles, cuddles, and yawns and hold onto those special memories forever.
Newborn Sessions the First 2 Weeks
If you are looking for those sweet posed sleepy baby photos, this is likely the best time to achieve that look. During the first two weeks of life, babies sleep the majority of the day, so it's simpler to capture those sleepy details without baby feeling disturbed. If you’d like to have your baby photographed right after birth, you can also contact me about fresh-48 photos, which are shot within the first 48 hours after birth usually at the hospital, birth center, or your own home.
Newborn Sessions Weeks 2-4
During weeks 2-4, we are guaranteed to have baby a little more awake. This doesn’t mean we won’t be able to achieve the sleepy baby photos of your dreams, but it may mean a little more time to allow baby to settle and drift off to sleep. As a mama of four, I know how much a baby’s features can change during those first few weeks. So while baby may not look the same as they did as a newborn, at this age they are starting to show some expressions, make some limited eye contact, and even have fuller cheeks to kiss!
Newborn Sessions 1 Month+
These milestone sessions are when your baby’s personality and smile start to emerge. The likelihood of having those little peanut poses is slimmer, but occasionally we can still nail some sleepy photos during this phase.
If you are hoping to schedule baby photos but you’re afraid you’ve missed your window for a newborn session, this is your sign that it’s not too late! Even if your baby is no longer “brand new,” they are still adorable, and you’ll never regret having keepsake photos from your little one’s first year.
