Is an In-Home Session a Good Fit for Your Family?

Are you preparing for the arrival of a new baby and trying to decide on the ideal location for your newborn session? In-home sessions can be a great way to photograph your family entering a new stage of life with so many personalized photos.

An in-home session is a great environment for lifestyle sessions. These are most popular among families who are welcoming a newborn into their family and don’t want to have to travel to the studio for their newborn photos. Having a session in your home allows you to document the season of life you are in right now in an environment that is your own. Whether it is the sweet and intentional details in the nursery or snuggling on the couch, we capture moments and details of your life that you may not even realize are there.

If you’re hoping your newborn session will embrace the peace and excitement of welcoming your baby into your home, and leaving with those memories captured then an in-home session might just be for you! Here are my tips for preparing your home and your family for your session.

Choosing the Spaces

It is very common for families to want to photograph their newborn session in the baby’s nursery, but that doesn’t have to be the only space we create images in during your in-home session. And if you don’t have a nursery for your baby but still want an in-home session, that is totally still an option!

Choose spaces that are clear from a lot of clutter and have a lot of natural light (the more window light the better). Some other popular spaces are the master bedroom and living room. If you are wanting photos on your bed in the master- maybe consider having neutral bedding to allow for your photos to have a natural and timeless feel. Ten years from now you want to look back at your gallery and see that sweet tiny baby and not the paisley teal bedspread that was trending.

Whichever rooms you choose to photograph in, try your best to clear any clutter. Hide all those diaper boxes and baby shower gift bags, car seat instruction manuals, and bags of baby clothes. Don’t feel the need to clean and organize- you can literally push those things in a spare room, closet, or bathroom for the time being.

Choosing Your Wardrobe

During your wardrobe consultation, let’s chat about the colors in your home. We want to make sure that the clothing you are wearing is complimented by your environment and not competing for attention. If your nursery is painted purple, we probably don’t want to wear orange tones or greens. But if your home is adorned with more neutral tones, we will have a few more options to choose from.

Using Your Home as the “Prop”

While I am a photographer who believes in timeless and classic portraits, that doesn’t mean I am opposed to using props in my sessions. HOWEVER, those props are things that might naturally occur in your daily life. Things like your home decor, art on your walls, bedding, etc. will all play a role in adding to the session. Be sure if there are things you do not want in the background of your photos that you remove them before the session.

Including Your Furry Family Members

In-home sessions are a great excuse to include your pets in the session. If your dogs/cat are up for the task, we may grab a few photos with them as well.
