Birth Photography and Videography is quickly becoming my favorite thing to document. There is something so magical and transformative about birth, and being asked to document it is a tremendous honor! Each birth is so different with new twists and turns and emotions, new life, new roles- so much newness. There is also so much excitement and challenge surrounding documenting the story of this fresh beginning of life.
Here is the story of the birth of Tallulah Rae (from the birth photographer’s perspective of course).
October 16th was already a pretty special day- Mama Hallie’s birthday! And of all days to go into labor, it just so happened to be the 16th. Hallie joked that she told Tallulah she could be born on any day except her birthday- but apparently Tallulah thought sharing a birthday with her mama sounded like more fun.
I got the text around 8:30am that she was being admitted into the hospital- right as we were headed out the door to church. Luckily for me, she was delivering at Habersham Medical Center which is just a few miles from our home and church.
When I got the thumbs up that she was progressing and it was “go-time” I headed home- grabbed my camera and headed toward the hospital.
Dad Nick was cracking jokes like normal, and both of their moms were in the room and striking up conversation trying to pass the time and contractions with a little laughter.
As time progressed and Hallie focused on her contractions, I loved watching how Nick connected with her. The way that he looked her in the eyes with the most serious face and would say something sarcastically to help bring a little smile to her face was one of my most favorite memories from the entire delivery. At one point I told her that when she could feel her legs again, the first thing she needed to do was give him a big kick for all the sarcasm and jokes he was throwing around the room.
Midwife Emily wasn’t on call that day, but Hallie had requested that she be the delivering doctor since they are friends and co-workers. Emily flew into the hospital on 2 wheels from out of town in a Georgia Bulldogs t-shirt... Another unforgettable memory from the delivery.
With every push closer to meeting Tallulah, Emily, Nick, and nurse Jordyn were full of encouragement and laughter. There was so much joy in the room. Some of my absolute favorite images from the delivery are actually photos of Nick reacting to events around him and how connected he and Hallie were during the whole process.
Tallulah Rae was born at 5:35pm weighing 7lbs 13 oz and 21 inches long. She was easily one of the most beautiful newborn babies I have ever seen. Her cheeks were full and pink and her eyes were wide open and could pierce through your soul. Welcome to the world sweet Tallulah Rae, the world is a better place because you are in it! I cannot wait to watch you grow!
