For the English Family’s fall session this year, I met them on their property where the trees were in all of their gorgeous orange and red tones. When I walked into their home I couldn’t help but see a gallery wall in their living room filled with prints from their wedding and several of their past sessions with me since their son Gavin was born. It was a great reminder of why I do what I do and how photographs are so much more than digital files to be forgotten, but actual stories to be displayed. One regret Mallory mentioned was not having newborn photos done of their daughter Evalyn like she did Gavin- it almost seemed like a missing piece in their gallery wall. She chalked it up to being a busy mom with two kids and she felt so guilty for not making that a priority. If I’m being honest- it’s a conversation I have with A LOT of second time mamas. The transition from one to two is probably the most challenging one (at least in my opinion as a mama of four). And figuring out life with a toddler and a newborn simultaneously is a GIGANTIC feat. But if there is anything I’ve learned as being a mom for 7 years and a photographer for 6 is that it is never too late to start taking photos.
Instead of dwelling in the regret or frustration that you didn’t take photos then, focus on starting now! One day when social media is no longer a thing, and our photos and computers lose their power- having tangible images of our children’s childhood and our life together as a family is going to be something we cling to. Physical photographs are one of the few investments I can think of that grows in value as time passes by. Those images have a magical way of pausing the season for a second and holding so many stories inside. It’s amazing how you can look at photographs and almost hear the way your son used to giggle every time the dog barked. Or how you can remember the smell of those newborn snuggles when you see a photo of baby feet. So yea, while sometimes we may miss a milestone or a season along the way, what is more important is that we recognize the power that photographs hold and make the decision to move forward with preserving as many memories as we possibly can.
